Before the 1967 war, the West Bank was part of Jordan, Gaza was part of Egypt, and the Golan Heights was part of Syria.

During the 1967 war, these areas were taken by Israel, which has illegally occupied them ever since. Israel is a signatory to the UN charter, which prohibits the acquisition of territory by war.

Who governed the land in Roman times is irrelevant to its modern ownership,
