I believe I have previously recommended the article linked below. I do so again because I think it provides an important counterweight to our tendency to treat the suppression of age structured male-male sexuality as a phenomenon of the mid to late 20th Century. Fisher and Funke point out that this was a central issue in Germany and England in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries when the first resistance to criminalization of gay sex was organized, often by the pioneers of "sexual science" like Magnus Hirschfeld. As with the controversies of our own time, the advocates of man-boy love lost these battles, and orthodoxies were put in place that continue to structure the relevant political imaginary. Fisher and Funke write: "From the mid‐nineteenth century onwards, it was increasingly difficult for homophile authors to affirm the eroticisation of age‐differentiated male‐male relations without raising the spectre of the predatory violation of vulnerable youth." They explain: To assuage fears about the violation of youth, homophile sexual scientists keen to present a socially acceptable model of male same‐sex relationships rejected affirmative framings of age‐differentiated relationships. They constructed an influential alternative model of homosexuality that was increasingly at odds with existing Hellenising accounts of same‐sex erotics that celebrated bonds between older and younger men. The article identifies the advocates on both sides during this period and the political forces to which they responded. For anyone wishing to delve deeper into the details of this era, I also recommend: (1) Funke, “'We Cannot Be Greek Now': Age Difference, Corruption of Youth and the Making of Sexual Inversion" (2013), which explores the collaboration between John Addington Symonds and Havelock Ellis on the book Sexual Inversion, first published in German in 1896 and in English the following year.
