Oh Errant, I am not going to go down this road yet again. You are a bit of a fanatic. No matter how appalling the consequences of capitalism, the problem is always that the market has not been applied in its absolutely purest form, and the solution is always therefore more capitalism. Maricarmen did not benefit from rent control. She was evicted by greedy landlords. The solution? Give landlords even more economic power. And somehow, by some mystical economic alchemy, everything will come out right. Your faith in capitalism is truly awe-inspiring. You talk of freedom as though it were a completely straightforward and completely unitary philosophical concept, but the freedom of landlords to evict tenants is contrary to the freedom of working people and pensioners not to be made homeless, as we saw in the case of Maricarmen. Freedoms can come into conflict. This is why we need to define which freedoms we want, which freedoms have maximum utility. These will generally be freedoms that do not come into conflict with the basic rights and dignity of others, but in fact enhance our entire society. And among those freedoms the freedom to form Greek love relationships will surely count very highly indeed. ![]() |
