Where you say, especially: Society has nonsensical notions that kids are too immature for plenty of things they're actually mature enough for. And honestly, even when the majority of kids aren't mature enough, not everyone matures at the same rate. Adultism is a denial of the diversity of humanity. And: Autonomy, including its risks, are beneficial to everyone, including children. They worry about the danger of autonomy, but what about the danger of subjugation? (...) It's seems clear that the concept of liberty just doesn't apply to children in the minds of most people like it does to adults. APPLAUSE!!!! Reminds me of the article, published in 1978 in a youth liberation zine, entitled "IS SEX THE PRIVATE PROPERTY OF ADULTS?" You said: It's just so ironic that they argue against autonomy for children on the grounds of preventing child abuse. The denial of children's autonomy really just enables abuse. Paternalistic control is a particularly harmful form of abuse. -- But it's about rhetoric and what most don't have a clue about: thought control norms in 'democratic' societies. Consider: "Thought control is to Western democracy what the Big Stick is to a Dictatorship." --Noam Chomsky So they attack one facet of a problem, that's the norm. While the other facets are ignored. On our topic, sex abuse was heralded as much more pressing and dangerous than physical abuse (in schools and at home), and the latter got suppressed for many decades. But it is now a little better understood (what with "the rod" no longer a legal option for many 'old school' parents). They don't want "radical" change. They want incremental change. Like the auto industry makes changes. Reap the rewards from one style of car in full and only then can you move on, to, say, this rocket car that's being advertised in the states. Note: my views are based on a limited study of this topic. And invite others' serious but not-biased, input! ![]() |
