The real prejudice, then, is against children as people; not against their shapes but against their minds. And of course we are all familiar with the myriad supposed justifications of that prejudice, and of the consequent mistreatment of children, that are everywhere cited: justifications in terms of the children's own good, or society's good; in terms of parental rights or duties; in terms of supposed necessity, or God's will, or whatever. Except that this analogy isnt about children. Its about an adult "in a childs body"(whatever that actually means) with the knowledge and experience of a middle aged adult. By definition, a real child can not and does not have the knowledge and experience of a middle aged adult. You are comparing apples and armadillos and saying "look!!! why are you biased against armadillos!!! they are the same as apples!!!!" "why would you find it strange that someone you knew as an adult suddenly changed into the body of a child??? Why are you biased against children!!!!" This analogy is rather sneaky and dishonest, and assumes that mind body dualism is real. this is not to say that adult dont sometimes treat children very badly. They do. But this story says more about you than about the characters in star trek or humanity as a whole. |
