The deeper project, which leads to my interest in General MacArthur, is to undo the "spell" done on the Japanese by the 1947 constitution, imposed on them after the war by SCAP, Supreme Command of Allied Powers, which is what MacArthur's post-war administration was called. MacArthur regarded the Japanese nation as operating at the level of a 14-year old boy. Having removed the Emperor-Projection, MacArthur naturally caught a LOT of positive and negative father-projection from the bomb-shocked, defeated, and father-less Japanese boys of that generation. As Japan re-militarizes, there needs to be an awareness that this is more than just a tech-process of trying to build more & smarter drones than the Chinese. It's the removal of a tourniquet from the soul; there will be a lot of bleeding. What's needed is to offer them an AUTHORIZING MODEL for masculinity, one which they can connect with at the most primitive, Bronze-Age level, but one which maps out growth (Plato, New Testament) beyond Bronze-Age savagery. The Homer-Image which I propose to deploy for the benefit of Japan . . .is, in military terms, a "reach-around" after de-militarization. Others will have to take hold of it and make sense of it, in Japanese terms. My job is simply to offer the most convenient text of the Iliad. So yes, from my point of view, MacArthur is the absent American Dad Boy-Lover figure WITH WHOM I have to fight, for the Japanese soul. All of this is merely poetic nonsense, of course. Very likely I'll record the Iliad & put the text & recording up, & no one will pay the least attention. But it would be BETTER if the Japanese had something stable to hold onto . . while they go through 2030's. --Sb --Sb |
