Thanks for the link to the Compact essay, which, for some reason, is not in fact paywalled for me. A remarkably interesting man, with a complex relationship to the intellectual currents of his time, I find him a strangely attractive figure. I particularly liked the following:All education, he believed, is essentially erotic. “I am your proper teacher when I love,” he writes in The New Reich, and “You are my proper pupil when you love.” A teacher who has never been aroused by the glow in the eye of his student is not a real teacher, and a student who has never felt the urge to gratify his teacher’s erotic wishes has probably never learned anything. Men copulate with women as a law of nature; men love boys as the ground of culture.
