The most famous, historic boys' choirs in the world remain strictly all-male ensembles. While many institutions have recently added separate girls' choirs to their schools, the traditional main touring and chapel ensembles keep an exclusively male composition. These choirs are traditionally structured as "men and boys" choirs, where boys with unchanged voices (trebles/sopranos) sing the upper parts, and adult men (tenors, baritones, and basses) sing the lower parts.

• Vienna Boys Choir (Wiener Sängerknaben): Perhaps the most famous boys' choir globally, founded in 1498. While they opened a separate girls' choir (Wiener Chormädchen) in 2004, the iconic core touring choirs consist strictly of boys aged 9 to 14.

• Choir of King’s College, Cambridge: Founded in 1441, this world-renowned choral foundation comprises 16 boy choristers and 14 male undergraduate choral scholars.
• Choir of Westminster Abbey: An all-male choir responsible for singing the daily services and historic state occasions (like royal weddings and coronations) in London.
• Choir of New College, Oxford: Established in 1379, this prestigious university chapel choir consists exclusively of 16 boy choristers and adult male clerks.

• Thomanerchor (St. Thomas Choir of Leipzig): Famously directed by Johann Sebastian Bach in the 18th century, this legendary institution has been an exclusively male choir for over 800 years.
• Regensburger Domspatzen: The cathedral choir of Regensburg, dates back to the year 975, making it one of the oldest entirely male vocal ensembles in existence.
