You said: As you know, whenever I make any remark slightly critical of the US on these forums, the result is a bunch of yanks leaping to the defence of every American institution, unable to concede that America's institutions might not be the greatest in the world and the model for the rest of the world to follow; and - you know what? - the world finds this attitude wearying, as do I. ---- I also find this attitude wearying -even tho i'm here in n.america so there! (heh) But up to now i seem to have been the relative exception rather than "the rule" so to speak, as far as critical consciousness. But we are, after all, all captured by those who weild the nukes, and as the book COMMAND AND CONTROL exposes, can at ANY TIME experience the stupidity of that whole thing, by "accident" or whatever. (I.e. did you know that most of the u.s. state of South Carolina ALMOST was wiped off the map when a nuclear warhead went haywire, but "happened" to not have exploded?) What always gets me, tho, is that OF COURSE, you europeans (etc.) always defend your OWN nation, while lambasting the u.s.a. So basically what europeans are doing is basically THE SAME as the n.americans: NOT seeing how such knowledge is allowed about the u.s.a., while NOT demystifying stuff at home. Get me? You're allowed to think critically about the u.s.a. because it is Other, and you have no hope of even getting close to changing the u.s.a.'s 'policing' actions, etc. Just like we in the u.s.a. are fed hype about europe, but have no real hope (outside of being involved diplomatically) of changing your nation's actions. And how canadian citizens are fed truths about the u.s.a. because their opinion just doesn't matter. They are a relatively tiny and weak nation, after all.
