Many states in the US have 16 or 17 as the age of sexual consent. You mean someone can be from such a state and be allowed to have sexual relations with 16 and/or 17 year olds in their own state, but not in a country that also allows it, because of this hypocritical federal law?

It's a double jeopardy issue, at least in spirit (apparently double jeopardy doesn't usually apply between different countries).

I think there should be a UN treaty against extraterritorial overreach like this. The extraterritorial overreach treaty should also prohibit a government from making internet/technology laws that apply to websites/software hosted outside of their country by people who live outside of their country simply because they have users in their country, like Australia's Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Act 2024 and Brazil's ECA.

I mean, I guess there's a point to be made about how so many websites are hosted by American companies and on American or Indian servers, so the treaty may give power to these countries and take power away from other countries, but so many people were unaware of ECA until it was too late, so extraterritorial overreach makes website/software development a minefield.
