I haven't yet managed to find my favbourite Kabouter post - it was posted here a few years ago, when he talked about taking some of his young friends on a boat trip to visit a lighthouse.

I made a Virginia Woolf joke, which - of course - he immediately got (he was incredibly well-read, along with all his other very impressive personal attributes).

It's how I like to think of him: sailing away to a distant lighthouse in the company of his boys.

We disagreed quite often, but one of the things Kabby and I shared was a love of the poetry of A.E. Housman. I think Kabby was not very much at home in the world he found himself born into, and he once said here that as a young man he found comfort in Housman's poetry. So here's Housman's poem 'For My Funeral' (from A Shropshire Lad):

O thou that from thy mansion
Through time and place to roam,
Dost send abroad thy children,
And then dost call them home,

That men and tribes and nations
And all thy hand hath made
May shelter them from sunshine
In thine eternal shade:

We now to peace and darkness
And earth and thee restore
Thy creature that thou madest
And wilt cast forth no more.
