I must congratulate Matteob on a correct quotation which flatly contradicts his claim that "in the book by Stephen which Marlowe publishes. I am “Mark” and the Stephen is positive about me." As you will see from his quote, nothing is said in it of Stephen's views on him. It was me who called him "an interesting young man," trying as usual to be kind to someone who didn't deserve it. Stephen, who was my best friend for the last three years of his life, very much shared my view that he was dangerous and unstable though someone to feel sorry for, and we used to advise one another on how to rebuff his wish to meet us without hurting his feelings. I have never considered hanging a sword of Damocles over anyone. I have merely pointed out one should be extremely wary of someone who acts as foolishly, indiscreetly and dangerously as this man has. From the relentless spite which has ensued from me mildly reprimanding him just once for characteristic indiscretion making revealing comments about me in a public space, it is perfectly obvious that if I had trusted him with knowledge that could hurt me, he would not hesitate to use it. As it is, he's simply very lucky that I am so different from him. But only an idiot would have relied on such good luck. I have no wish to get into a public quarrel here. Then why so deliberately do so? I would never have spoken or written of him again in my life, and I'd be thrilled if he had the honour and decency to avoid ever referring to me again. ![]() www.amazon.com/dp/1481222112 |
