The very cute William Johnson played Wilgus Collier at age 9 (the same age as he)  in the short film Fat Monroe, and ages 9 and 14 in the compilation The Wilgus Stories. He was cast out of Hazard, Kentucky, as part of a local effort by filmmaker Andrew Garrison and the Appalshop media collective to use authentic Appalachian voices rather than professional Hollywood actors. After his role in The Wilgus Stories at age 14--when he had begun puberty--he disappeared from film work. Maybe that was a good thing after all... ;-)

THE WILGUS STORIES is a one-hour program made of three short films about moments in the life of Wilgus Collier, a boy growing into a gentle man in the mountains in Kentucky. The stories are adapted from the work of Gurney Norman, the former Poet Laureate of Kentucky, that appeared as short stories in his book, "Kinfolks."

THE WILGUS STORIES, as the entire triptych, premiered at SXSW. The first two films of the group, FAT MONROE and NIGHT RIDE, were each released separately in the festival circuit and broadcast, individually, on PBS. FAT MONROE, starring the Academy Award-nominated, Ned Beatty, was declared "...a pint-sized classic," by The New York Times. The second short film, NIGHT RIDE, premiered at Sundance and was screened at the Locarno International Film Festival as a "Pardo di Domani."

DESCRIPTIONS:

Hitchhiking home from the movies at age 9, going for a joy ride with an uncle at age 14, or giving a ride home to the woman of his dreams at 23 are three events that change Wilgus Collier and those around him. Starting from the 1950's up to a tie-dyed 1969, this movie presents a humorous and poignant perspective on the significant moments of daily life. —Anonymous

A triptych of adaptations from three stories from Kentucky Poet-Laureate Gurney Norman's "Kinfolks" about his beloved character, Wilgus Collier. In three defining moments of Wilgus's life we see him grow to manhood in the 1960's coal fields. Tour de force performances by Ned Beatty and Frank Hoyt Taylor ("Junebug," "Obselidia") —Andrew Garrison

A trilogy of coming of age stories based on the short stories of Kentucky writer, Gurney Norman. The shape of young Wilgus Collier's life described in encounters at three different ages; with a fast-talking trickster at age 9, with a hell-raising uncle at age 14, and with the woman of his adolescent dreams, only he is now 23 and she is 37. —Anonymous

Gurney Norman's short story, navigates the intricate relationship between young Wilgus Collier and the enigmatic Fat Monroe. As Wilgus embarks on his journey home, he encounters Monroe, whose peculiar personality and antics challenge the boy's perceptions of the world and the adults within it. Many viewers will resonate with the frustration of navigating adult sarcasm during childhood, making the narrative universally relatable.
