Breaking point yet to be reached, again

Posted by Crucifixus on 2026-April-22 14:19:41, Wednesday

I recall endless moments on various boards when posters were certain the hysteria over paedophilia would become so grotesque that the public would finally question its fixation on the matter. Since McMartin (USA) / Dutroux (Europe), that prophecy has failed without exception.

I was always baffled by the posters’ naïveté. No one was going to change their mind, obviously.

And yet, watching the present Trump drama, I almost see the temptation. One thinks: «surely this is a step too far – surely they must reconsider». Though, of course, we are talking about emotions, not positions.

Still, this Onion piece struck me as oddly hopeful. Not because I imagine that this time the masses will come to their senses, but because the headline, «Mainstream Party Leadership Seeks to Unite Pedo Party», offers a glimpse – a loan, if you like – of a future in which it ceases to be satire.

«Why are you crying?»
«I had a dream in which you hugged me»
