I have read and re-read those passages since they first came out

And it shows -- you do tend to set of my Paglia radar.

An advanced copy! Goddamn, that's some rather hallowed terrain you're treading there.

I discovered SP by accident, through a mention in a gay mag. A gay journo I quite admired said he wanted to have her baby, so I was intrigued. Pure impulse buy with no knowledge of her at all. I'll never forget the experience of lying on the couch under Chapter One, being pulverised in an entirely new and mind-altering way.

This was pre-internet and for many years I didn't even know what she looked like - and when I found a VHS video for sale, of the Monika Treut Female Misbehavior doco, I was in a dilemma - what if I got it and she was a disappointment? How could anyone live up to the words in SP? Needless to say my fears were ungrounded.

My friend told me that Paglia was a difficult author to work with

I would have been very disappointed to hear otherwise! Apparently she had to fight tooth and nail to keep the phrase, "The Dionysian is no picnic." And thank Apollo she did - it's one of many phrases that tolls reliably in my subconscious.

So is her last great planned book on Native American religion ever going to appear? Or is it fated to join SP Volume II in the great unrealised?
