Not understanding a word of Spanish actually made it a magical musical mystery tour. Once the dragons arrived, though, I was a bit disappointed there wasn't at least a little bit of war (JOKING!). I actually preferred your other recent recommendation: Rose Tremain's Sadler's Birthday which I've now just about finished. Damn, I was taken with her writing - I'd never heard of her, but GPT informs she's the real deal, which was certainly my immediate opinion. Something very addictive about her style and I think I'll have to read some more. She's got one of those styles that agitates one to keep reading, to try and get to the bottom of it. Ian McEwan has said of her: "a true stylist...who cares about her novels at the level of the sentence". Yes, that got from the start. As for the boysexual relationship, a fascinating one, very convincingly rendered, nicely balanced on the bitter-sweet scale. But, boy, the mother sure loomed large in this one as a decisive force. |
