BUT...When you write that "I would bet the entire Western canon it will NEVER work in culture that has any Western flavour to it" and of "the West's obsessive, impossible-to-remove, deranged addiction to sex phobia" I wonder. Is it sex-phobia or pederast-phobia? You go back to the late 19th century -- sure I need to read von Kupffer (thanks for the reference!) and pull out my dog-eared copy of Otto Weinenger's Sex and Character. But I wonder if we need to go farther back -- to the 4th and 5th centuries when at least pederast phobia if not sex phobia got written into the West's cultural DNA. What do you do with the spectacle of the Roman Catholic Church? Took institutional shape during those two centuries. Pederasts' picnic? More like a banquet that never ends. You set about creating a vast homo-social space where men who really just don't want to have anything to with -- YUCK! -- women can spend their lives teaching boys to sing, genuflect, wave censors around, dress up in pretty clothes, and be right there by your side when you turn bread and wine into the Body and Blood of God Himself -- not to mention hear all about their secret lusts. What's the price for the privilege of an entire life surrounded by boys (and other boy lovers?) Well, a degree of dissembling about the nature of desire, and if you just can't keep your hands to yourself in the presence of all that young male pulchritude, you have to learn to hide and sublimate. Creates conditions for all kinds of mischief a millennium or so down the road when the grip the institution has over culture and politics starts to loosen... SR
