I've never encountered the prompt you talk of before, on any browser. I'm curious what browser you're using to access BoyChat if you're seeing messages like that.

It is possible to navigate to http://secure.boychat.org and, generally, there is no automatic attempt to redirect to the https version. Some browsers attempt to do this by default, but this is not happening server-side per my understanding (may be something for cogs to look into).
