You can't float a teaser like that and not follow through. The title is certainly arresting. A BoyChat story writing contest? Your experience reminds me of a time many years ago. I tried reading the currently available books for 8-12yo boys - I was looking for an equivalent to The Three Investigators. I'd loved that series as a kid, the secret headquarters, three boys against the world. To say such a thing didn't exist by the 90s is an understatement. They weren't writing these books for boys, they were writing them for the boys' mothers. I couldn't find a "boy's adventure" that allowed the "hero" to have a boy as a best friend. It was always a girl and the girl was always slightly superior to the boy in every facet of life. Until I found one. A boy on an island made friends with a native lad. They spoke different languages but became close, adventures were had, lives were saved, and, yes, joy of joys, the final scene revealed the derring-do best bud was a girl. LESSON LEARNED, BOYS! I stopped looking after that. There's a limit to what one's blood pressure pills can do. |
