Once one has joined a party, they forget all about rationality and even their own personal interests are often disregarded. It's all about ideology and feeling of belonging. Also, parties follow societal changes, rather than the other way around. If youth sexual liberation takes place, all the political spectrum will eventually support it. Typically, progressive people are the first ones to support a change, and conservatives are the last ones to defend it once it has been solidly implemented. But parties are not necessary for that, unless institutions and laws get involved. By that time, things are generally already decided. Politics are mostly a theater to distract the crowd. Anyway, if you want to promote such a thing, political parties are probably the last place to go for that purpose. They will only rally once it is popular enough for being a vote magnet.
