| I'm not a huge fan of AI or of much technology generally, but to hope for a mass rejection of technology is not realistic. The internet and mobile phones are also technologies which, arguably, have had detrimental social effects, but these technologies haven't gone away, and neither will AI. You yourself are using the internet. When you write "It really is up to us" who is the "us" that you refer to? What agency is there in the world that could enforce a global ban on the use of AI? AI is unstoppable because corporate profit is unstoppable and because humanity is split into competitive national states. Until these systemic issues are addressed there is surely little point in hectoring people to forgo a technology that they know that others will use whether they use it or not, and indeed little reason why individuals should not avail themselves of the everyday conveniences that AI provides. |
