Happiness Directed by Todd Solondz 1998 2h 14m IMDb: "The lives of several individuals intertwine as they go about their lives in their own unique ways, engaging in acts which society as a whole might find disturbing in a desperate search for human connection." TAGS: Dark comedy, Psychological drama, Satire, Comedy, Drama SOURCE: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0147612/ Very strange film, but generally well-received by critics and it won a bunch of awards. One of the characters in the film, Bill Maplewood, is just a regular guy, and is not depicted as a (so-called) "pedophile" usually is--take the film M, for example--as a sinister, leering, terrifying monster. In this movie the more recent narrative about "pedophiles" is highlighted. A pedophile is manipulative, seemingly kind, gentle, and he grooms his victims carefully. He could even be "the-man-next-door," so one must be contantly alert! Report any suspicions you have to the authorities! In the film, the "pedophile" character is made to seem human. He is married, with children and a loving wife. He knows that he is sick, and suffers from sexual obsessions/compulsions. He knows that he must be stopped, and he struggles--unsuccessfully--to control his perverted desires, eventually sexually abusing the young friend of his son. Actually, raping him. And another boy, too. Just the image we want to public to imagine when they hear of a BoyLover "loving boys," right? So, just what is it that makes YOU happy? M. More "anti-pedophile" propaganda, as usual...
