Daniel Latimer befriends the troublesome Ornshaw. However, when Daniel falls in love with Melody Perkins, their friendship is jeopardized as Ornshaw becomes jealous of the time Daniel spends with her. Initially embarrassed by the attention, Melody eventually returns Daniel’s feelings, and the couple announces to their parents that they want to get married—not in the future, but right away. Although the adults attempt to dissuade them, Daniel and Melody's determination leads Ornshaw to have a change of heart. Their classmates gather at one of their hideouts to 'marry' the couple, but their discovery leads to a final showdown between the children and their teachers. During the chaos, one boy throws a firecracker into a car, causing it to explode, and the teachers flee—except for one strict English teacher who continues to chase the children.
