7 possible reasons for pedophilia

Hypotheses

Childhood trauma hypothesis

Pedophilia doesn't have an evolutionary purpose, it's not innate, but caused by trauma.

Accident hypothesis

Pedophilia is innate, but it doesn't have an evolutionary purpose. It's an accident.

First reproductive partner hypothesis

The male pedophile starts a sexual/romantic relationship with the girl before she's even fertile to ensure that he's her first reproductive partner.

Adoption hypothesis

The pedophile and orphan are drawn to each other, so the pedophile can adopt the orphan, increasing the orphan's chance of survival. This is particularly evolutionary beneficial to the pedophile if the orphan is related.

Mentorship hypothesis

Pedophiles serve as natural mentors for children. I think BLueRibbon believes this.

Sex education hypothesis

Prepubescence is a great time to explore one's sexuality. Or at least it would be naturally. No need to worry about getting either partner pregnant. The pedophile teaches the kid about sex, and it's not just theory. They prepare the kid to reproduce when they get older.

Assessment hypothesis

The pedophile assesses the attractiveness of the child. When the child grows up and the pedophile leaves them, the pedophile can recommend their ex to their relative. This helps the relative to choose a better partner, and improves the pedophile's ex's reproductive success because they got recommended as a partner due to their relationship with the pedophile.

Conclusion

Pedophiles are typically male, likely because it's bad from an evolutionary perspective for females to be taken out of the gene pool. Only the last four hypothesis explain the correlation between homosexuality and pedophilia in men, as boys need pedophiles too. As such, I don't consider the first three to be sufficient. I'm not really convinced by the adoption and mentorship hypotheses though, as you'd think purposes like that would be better served through platonic feelings. There's already a platonic nurturing instinct.

I therefore conclude that the sex education and assessment hypotheses are the most likely.
