...struggling to make his business successful, a rich guy said that he'd pay Benz to build him one of the experimental cars that Benz had an idea for.
(That's roughly how the story goes...)

BUT...

He told Benz that Benz had to name the car after the rich man's daughter. And her name was Mercedes...

And NOW you know the REST of the story...

Wait...

I just checked with a chatbot:

The name "Mercedes" in "Mercedes-Benz" originates from a Spanish girl's name meaning "merciful" or "gracious." It was popularized by Emil Jellinek, a European automobile dealer and businessman, who named his daughter Mercedes. Jellinek used the name for his early car models and branding, which became associated with luxury and quality.

The "Benz" part comes from Karl Benz, the German engineer who built the first gasoline-powered automobile. When Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) and Benz & Cie merged in 1926, the combined brand adopted the name "Mercedes-Benz" to honor both the popular model name "Mercedes" and Karl Benz's pioneering work in automobile manufacturing.

Then I looked up Emil Jellinek and was told this:

Why does Mercedes-Benz have a woman's name? A German girl is to blame.

A German brand, synonymous with quality, with a star as its symbol... We have no doubt, we're talking about Mercedes-Benz. But where does its name come from? Why did the company adopt this woman's name? A German girl is to blame.

Little Adrienne Manuela "Mercedes"

Emile Jellinek, a diplomatic consul and prominent businessman of the time, had a daughter in 1890 whom he named Adrienne Manuela Ramona Jellinek. Everyone in her family affectionately called the little girl Mercedes.

The Family Name Association

Jellinek was a businessman and always had an interest in the car racing that was beginning to expand in the 19th century. His driving nickname was Monsieur Mercédès.

This interest in cars also extended to DMG (Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft), where it received a commission from Jellinek himself to build a fleet of vehicles with one condition: they would bear the name Daimler-Mercedes.

The cars were a true success of the time, so an agreement was signed between Daimler and Jellinek, with Emile Jellinek—renamed Emil Jellinek-Mercedes—holding an important position in the new company.

Over the years, the Mercedes name became increasingly prominent within the company. After another agreement between Daimler and the Benz company (another major company of the time), the Daimler-Benz company was born.

From that moment on, and to this day, its brand name was changed to Mercedes-Benz. This is the curious story of the birth of a company that remains a benchmark in the automotive industry to this day.

So, I don't know...I remembered (perhaps incorrectly) what I mentioned above from one of the films. But I'm not going back to watch them all! Sorry...

Oh, now I checked Wikipedia:

[...]Emil Jellinek-Mercedes, an Austrian automobile entrepreneur who worked with DMG (Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft), registered the trademark in 1902, naming the 1901 Mercedes 35 hp after his daughter Mercedes Jellinek. Jellinek was a businessman and marketing strategist who promoted "horseless" Daimler automobiles among the highest circles of society. [...]

I give up. I'm finished on this topic. Sorry... :-/
