This is one domain even the more liberal Catholics are obliged to fight back against.

Forty-five years ago Foucault argued that that Catholic sacrament of confession had been secularized into a general modality of power/knowledge: the modern subject "emerges" in subjection to surveillance and confession -- to the point of willingly confessing.

What a profound twist: the sinner is now the one who hears the confession, but fails to confess his hearing!
