Monkey, I know of other liberal-minded, yet uncritical, supporters of the furthest claims of transgenderism who are going into this uninformed and misinformed. They think, in being so supportive, that what they're doing is supporting tolerance and individual liberty when what they're really doing is ignoring an obvious threat to young people held in the grip of a social contagion and mental health crisis which few appear capable of reasoning themselves out of. They think it's a civil liberties issue when what it really is is a mental health issue. That there are vile bigots who hate them and the people who support them is separate and irrelevant to the question of "Is this good policy?" The answer is, almost certainly, "No!" But I'm willing to wait for more evidence. We'll see if it is true that "Some really DO benefit from these treatments," which is a different claim again from "Some of these still-developing kids do benefit from these treatments and they need them before they "turn"!" All will be answered in the fullness of time (I would argue, they already have been) but, in the meantime, is the proper response to take every child or adolescent's truth-claim, i.e. that they're the gender opposite to the one "assigned" at birth (an absurd and total capitulation to pseudoscience, by the way) at face value and, on that basis, infuse them with powerful, oppositional, hormones that WILL change them forever after? As Clint Eastwood said, with a gun pointing at the bad guy "Are you feeling lucky?" In this case, however, the gun is not pointed at us but at the kid feeling lady-like or decidedly butch. We won't be the ones suffering the consequences of our bad calls, they will. |
