I can well imagine Matzneff's wry smile if I were to pass on to him your good news that he's rich. And where do you think his "privilege" came from? Such as it ever was, acceptance by a circle of deservedly esteemed Parisian intellectuals who saw his value, it was hard earned over decades of original thinking.
