Fâzıl Bey, who lived between 1757(?)-1810, was known as “Enderunlu Fâzıl” because he was raised in Enderun, and is a divan poet with works such as “Divân”, “Defter-i Aşk”, “Hûbânnâme”, “Zenânnâme”, “Sûrnâme-i Şehriyâr” and “Çengînâme”. Enderûnlu Fâzıl Bey and his works were criticized by historical and literary circles both in his time and later because they were seen as outside the classical definition. This article examines Fâzıl Bey’s Çengînâme, which has not been studied in detail before. First, a comparative text of the work was created, and Çengînâme was examined in terms of form and content according to this text. In the work where the çengis of different religions and nations are mentioned, contrary to what the title suggests and what is stated in the sources, the function of çengis in social life is not emphasized. Instead of the term “köçek” used for professional male dancers with feminine attitudes, Fâzıl Bey used “çengî”, a name given to female dancers in the Ottoman Empire. The poet states that he mentioned 43 çengis in his Çengînâme, but the fact that the çengis names/nicknames are based on word associations makes it difficult to determine these names/nicknames. In this study, the çengis names/nicknames were determined based on seven copies indicating names/nicknames. In addition, the çengis names/nicknames in the seven copies were shown by making a table according to their clause numbers. Based on the content of the text, the çengis were examined under the titles of nation and religion, body characteristics, age, diseases, time and place. Fâzıl Bey’s Çengînâme is also an example of the Şehringîz and Hezel genres.
