this was the subject of an RT documentary a few years ago, and a hollywood movie

an american police trick

The police are especially good at getting kids and young working class adults to confess to crimes they have not committed.

One of their tactics is to lie to the suspect saying if they confess they will be released quickly, but if they don't confess they and others will suffer much worse.
