when the roman legions first campaigned into Germany?

There were rumors of the barbarians liking the taste of human flesh.

I may be depending on movies and books, but that legend is firmly fixed in my small brain.

If I remember right, at that time, the German people were an unknown commodity. That is, the Romans knew practically nothing about the Germans because the scouts that were sent in to explore the area never returned.
