'modern masculinity has become nihilistic'

Interesting. Messerschmidt got his PhD at the University of Chicago (from its Committee on Social Thought) and now teaches at Deep Springs College, a very unconventional two-year college in California that only began admitting female students in 2018. (The student body numbers only 26.) His contribution to the collection Nietzsche on Women and the Eternal-Feminine, published last year, is titled "Nietzsche's Misogyny and a Feminine Philosophy of the Future." He describes the book project he is working on (based on his dissertation) as "arguing that Nietzsche reads the death of God first and foremost as an opportunity to liberate the human body."

In college I read The Birth of Tragedy Out of the Spirit of Music, but have only dabbled in Nietzsche since. (I got part way through The Genealogy of Morality at one point.)
