This is a thread from a long time ago, and I was inclined to just let it go, but I feel that I must point out that Depardiau has not been convicted of rape, and has denied any wrongdoing. Of course, my experience with BC has made me realise that people here reflexively think the worst of people, and this particularly goes for anything to do with accusations of sexual abuse. It is one of the very many reasons why optimism with regard to sexual heretics as a "movement" is laughably misplaced.

Another reason is the belief that "if society thinks people who make sexual jokes are sexual abusers, it makes it wrong" and that society's prudery "can turn something that's innocuous" into something that really is "dirty and wrong". People will go out of their way to find spurious arguments for established injustice.

Then there's the fact that some of us here internalise narratives about other groups, such as people from other countries, which do not correspond to reality. It is absolutely no use whatever to point to studies showing that immigrants create more jobs than they take, etc. It won't have the slightest effect, because people's political opinions are rooted in personality structures that are themselves the result of social forces and sexual repression.

So it's a chicken and egg question. Authoritarian personalities cannot be overcome without radical social change, but social change is impossible whilst so many people have authoritarian personalities.
