The show takes a very black and white approach to showing that nothing in life is black and white. It ends up being both excessively dark, and silly.
Most people are aware that mental illness does not come with helpful, imaginary, alcoholic friends, but the show seems to lack any self-awareness, as it cuts away to the recursive puppet show every time it needs a lampshade, about this blinding fact. Like pearls scattered all over a Doyle-conceived crime scene, it is littered with corny, hit-or-miss tropes much like those in the puppet show itself.
