I took the youth as more a representation of his generation, and the general personalities, problems, and tribulations that "afflicts" them as a whole.

the bomb strap to him, is a good analogy... was it truly him that strapped it to his body? Even though it's portrayed this way, the self destruction is something imposed by society in many ways.

A generation without friends, (less it be through some electronic device) frustrated parents, a life not worth really living

I think you have to take this film out of it's literal context, and add-lib to the entirety of the message.

youthful psychotic depression is also something this film brings to light...

Food for thought on how this culture is truly rearing it's male offspring.
Sometimes sententious images are meant to invoke deeper thought?
