I followed and read the linked articles you provided, except the comedy one. (Disclaimer: I am not an expert on "the British" and mostly have information from encyclopedias and from some limited personal experience with "British" people.) First, I'm not sure that there is such a thing as "the British". Great Britain encompasses several different cultures, and each is unique, just as are all other cultures are unique. ;-) I think you could say "the English" and narrow down the ethnic groups to a more specific one. Of course, "the English" ethnic group contains quite a bit of diversity due to their history. "The English" have a rather tumultuous history, given the number of times they have been overrun by invaders/conquerors. My impression is that the English have an inferiority complex and a suffer from a distinct lack of identity. In other words, they hate themselves. Could this explain the importance that Puritanism has played in their history? And the stress in English culture on uniformity, regimentation, decorum, the monarchy, etc.? Anyway, I, too, believe that the English treat their children poorly, which damages the children. And the Americans (originally for the most part descendants of the English) have instituted in law many of the worst characteristics of English beliefs, particularly in laws concerning sex. Am I full of shit without knowing it, or have I hit on some important points about the English? What do you think? M. The "English" can be quite touchy S.O.B.s, am I right, am I right?... |
