Apparently, in the Middle Ages it was widely believed that the Marriage at Cana, where Jesus performed his first official miracle, was to be the wedding of the future St John the Evangelist to... Mary of Magdala!

But (the story goes) the groom was so awe-struck by the miracle that he jilted his bride to follow Jesus, while Mary Magdalene was so humiliated that she became a prostitute (later repenting, of course, and following Jesus herself).

None of this has the slightest textual support, but it is a nice story - and an elegant explanation for why Jesus shows such apparent favoritism towards these two disciples. Having given up marital bliss and comfort, the story goes, they were shown exceptional signs of favour in Jesus' life - and, almost uniquely among the disciples, neither of them is supposed to have been martyred.
