Just Ask For Diamond (1988), a kid (played by Colin Dale) is the real brains behind a detective agency, and solves a crime mystery whilst soaking in the bathtub. This is if your kid can cope with a limey accent.

The Witches (1990), a kid outwits organised hexism. (Random fact: The hero's grandmother in this film is Mai Zetterling, who directed the 1966 film Nattlek / Night Games.) The Roald Dahl story on which the film is based has been criticised by feminists for alleged misogyny, which is certainly a considerable point in its favour. Dahl hated this adaptation, but then he hated all the adaptations of his novels. (There's also a 2020 adaptation of this novel, which I have not seen.)

My Side of the Mountain (1969), boy needs all his resourcefulness to live in the wilderness.

The Black Stallion (1979), Kelly Reno befriends a stallion and then, with the guidance of Mickey Rooney, becomes a jockey and races his stallion to victory.
