Competence of consent instead of age of consent

I don't think my position is extreme. There are many reasons why a relationship between an adult and a child should be heavily scrutinized, like any potential forms of manipulation (religion, politics, diet etc).

Yet, it is also clear that age is truly just a number.
Parents are the first who say stuff like "my kid is so smart for his age" or "sometimes I ask myself if you're a teen or a toddler". This is because time is not always directly proportional to accumulated experience.
Some people develop life skills earlier or later than other ones, which means it would be more appropriate to focus on the skills that are deemed to be mastered in order to get a relationship, rather than the amount of years spent on earth.
