The age of consent should be abolished

This would probably be considered radical, but my suggestion is, instead of lowering or otherwise reforming age of consent laws for sex, why not just abolish them altogether, and leave it up to parents to decide when their children can have sex and to make sure they do it in a safe/responsible way? It seems like this would be consistent with the way our society treats other things.

Parents are already given broad authority over their children's lives - they are trusted to drive their children places, feed them, clothe them, make sure they receive medical care if they need it, decide who watches them, etc. - so I think, since sexual activity (assuming it happens safely/responsibly and with mutual consent) doesn't carry serious inherent risks that outweigh its benefits, it makes sense to let parents have authority over their children's lives in that respect as well.
