I'm not sure who did the English/American voice-over, but I doubt it was the actors themselves. I think they did the Italian voice-over to scenes they had lip-synched in English
Yes, that makes more sense than my original theory. It would explain why Maccanti doesn't mention an English dub. If that is the case, then I suppose it is better to listen to the Italian audio, because at least it's their own voices! Thanks for helping me to sort this out in my head.

I agree that Bertolucci has more than a touch of homophobia - the one instance of a man having sex with a boy is a rape by a fascist. The 'abnormal', non-procreative (indeed, life-destroying) sex of the fascist Attila is contrasted with the fertility and fecundity of the peasants. (Indeed, am I mistaken in thinking that even when we see him having intercourse with Regina, from their sexual position it's actually anal intercourse, i.e. non-procreative?) I still admire the film, though. I think it has an epic grandeur as a Marxist parable, and there are many aspects of it I admire.
