Even if you've confessed, their role is to ensure you're given proper due process, make sure your rights are properly exercised, make sure the prosecution does everything by the book, make sure the court is aware of any mitigating circumstances, help negotiate a possible plea deal, and take note of any discrepancies that might be used for an appeal.

Given that 90% of cases in the U.S. are resolved by plea deal, they'd never have clients if they only took cases they could "win."
