Hysteria is well and alive; there's no doubt. It's well, alive, and thriving, yet I might consider that there is something positive to be gleamed if we put this hysteria in context. I think this increase in hysteria is coinciding with a rapid questioning of the systems governing our situation as youthlovers. When a system is under duress and the everyday violence is questioned, conflict inevitably results. As far as our entire system is concerned, there's quite a few ways in which people are becoming disillusioned. The recent years have brought talks of police abolition (and we do know how the police love to maim us), and the current day brings a heightened awareness of American colonial interests in the oppression and Israeli occupation of Palestine. More directly relevant than the latter (although you'll find all these three connected given police connections to the IDF) is the way recent years have brought matters of youth autonomy and so-called "grooming" to the forefront of critical thought as queer activists have attempted both to discredit grooming accusations and increase liberties for trans youth. Systems are cracking, although they stay steadfast and of course the ruling class has scraped through bigger perils before. Overall, though, I think I find good reason to be hopeful that the increasing severity of the hysteria is not something which will stand unchallenged. |
