The coming of gayhood innocence

Posted by Errant on 2023-November-17 08:19:20, Friday

So Chucky started back up last month... only to take a break after four episodes due to the writer's strike. But whatever. In the first episode of the season we get the still underage Jake and Devon (the actors are now 17) snuggling and smooching when all of a sudden they start discussing whether they're nervous and if they're "ready."

I mean, seriously? Three seasons in and they haven't messed around yet? So instead of two boys who'd normally get it on the first chance they get, these two boys have been waiting for the "right time" like a straight couple since 2021. And later on Chucky taunts them for not having gotten laid yet, so they're obviously setting it up as a continuing issue for them.

I suppose this was inevitable. Gay relationships have been going through their gentrification phase and this is especially going to be true for portrayals of underage gay teen relationships in the media: sanitized, pure and innocent. And to drive the point home, in a later episode their adoptive mother walks in on them and so she decides to give them the talk about safe sex. Basically, "safe sex" means "Stop! You'll shoot your eye out!" Two boys who are in a monogamous relationship with no risk of pregnancy and near zero risk of STDs and there's supposedly still something to be cautious about because... kids are "innocent," yo! Welcome to the club where you can be boring just like everyone else.
