Dear Auntie Karen,
My son runs into the street sometimes. How should I handle the situation?

Dear Concerned mother:
Reason with your child. Explain the danger. Give him time-outs so he can think about it. Ground him, or take away other of his priveleges. DO NOT ever strike your child, as that is always counterproductive and can cause serious psychological problems for your son in the coming years. Best of luck to you!
Regards,
Auntie Karen

Dear Auntie Karen,
I tried your suggestions on reasoning with my son, giving him a time out, taking away priveleges, etc. instead of giving him a hard swat on the backside like I was tempted to do. A friend (the father of 4 kids) said I should have done what my instincts told me (and what he did with his kids, as this is a life-threatening situation) and just give my son a quick, hard swat on the behind, followed by an explanation later about the danger.
Well, my son did it again, anyway.
He'll be laid to rest this coming Sunday. It will be a closed-casket service (he was hit by a truck). I know you live nearby, so you are welcome to attend. We will all miss him. He was such a sweet, happy, joyful little four-year-old boy.

P.S. (NO) thanks for your stupid advice.

Dear
Sorry about your loss, but think about all the potential psychological harm and behavior problems you avoided by not hitting your son. In the long run, it was worth it for the well-being of your child.
All the best,
Auntie Karen

Dear Auntie Karen,
WTF!?!?!? MY SON IS DEAD!?!?!?
