Start here.

Personality wise, you need to be even-tempered and consistent. Autistic kids can have trouble sorting out social stimuli so things like sarcasm and mood shifts which require a lot of extra attention to context can be confusing. Keep it simple and you can help an autistic kid get the most out of life. The tricky part is navigating the difference between what a child wants and what their parents want and oftentimes parents just want their kid to be "normal." Sometimes that's not a big deal if the focus is stuff like language skills, but autistic kids are also known for engaging in atypical behavior and efforts to suppress that behavior to get the child to fit into society can be problematic. But if you can help him become more independent, then you'll be able to make everyone involved happy.
