I had Googled "who invented gender"
... and got:
"In 1955, the controversial and innovative sexologist John Money first used the term “gender” in a way that we all now take for granted: to describe a human characteristic. Money's work broke new ground, opening a new field of research in sexual science and giving currency to medical ideas about human sexuality."

I thought that seemed reliable -- it was from the book The Man Who Invented Gender - Engaging the Ideas of John Money, By Terry Goldie - UBC Press

From the book (which I downloaded later)
"Money certainly considered himself to be the source of the concept of “gender.” As my discussion shows, however, Money might have just popularized a usage that already existed, at least in some small way."

Ok -- the concept of "gender" may have existed before Money wrote about it.

Haven't finished the book yet, but looks worth reading. He has a section on "pedophilia".

See pp.7-8 of the book for some incredible semantic gyrations about "he did/didn't/kinda/sorta invented the concept of gender.

Re Freud: Don't like most of his theories -- but I can't go into that now...
