Caelum ('sky') is neuter, so I appreciate that you might well mistake it for the nominative case. But in this famous line from Horace it's actually accusative - the object of the sentence. The subject is unexpressed. Literally, "they change the sky [above them], not their souls, who flee across the ocean." Meaning that a change of place does not necessarily produce a change in mindset. |
