Many cultural traditions have posited the idea that created things fall short of their ideal or intended way of being. Judeo-Christian religion suggests that this failure was not inevitable – we are to blame for it – but we're also sort of stuck with it. Not so much a matter of "decay," more a matter of "fall."

What "excuses" for what are you thinking of?
