"I think that in calling attention to the socially beneficial role of historical pederasty we should want to define it broadly as a type of mentorship that can include sex but does not have to."

Even as someone who derives a great deal of personal meaning from acting as a mentor, I can't even begin to describe how much it rankles to push for intergenerational relationships on utilitarian grounds. Reeks of snake oil and detracts from the more indulgent (and non-puritanical) value of friendship for friendship's sake. Somehow I doubt that anyone who is not already predisposed to agree with the liberalization of intergenerational relationships would be terribly won over by telling them, "It's GOOD for you!" Give me unstructured pederasty any day of the week.

The term "pedophile" may be loaded with the wrong kind of connotations, but I still think it comes across as somehwat neutral, at least in its etymology if not in its origin and use as a pathology. I mean, it literally translates as "boy lover." Anything else more "acceptable" would come across as a euphemism as if we had something to hide.

"Pederasts" and "catamites," on the other hand, I am tempted to think may be useful for their shock value. White-washing may have it's purposes, but the unvarnished image of a bugger and his kept boy is not just a step away from the sexual predator, but perhaps a step in the right direction... even if it means that Batman and Robin may have some 'splaining to do.
